1.             Opening Ceremony Sequence of Events.

Notes:

·          Units will be in a Regimental formation with Company’s in mass in 3 columns.  Commanders will post three 30-inch steps to the front of and centered on their Company.  Company/Unit Guidon Bearers will post one 30-inch step to the rear and one 30-inch step to the left of the Commander.  The Q8IDC will be attended by a number of high-ranking military and civilian officials.  As such, it is imperative that all participating members act professionally during formations, and at all times during the Q8IDC.

·         When the Adjutant or COT directs “BRING YOUR UNITS TO ______,” subordinate element commanders will echo the directed command.
·         Ripple” commands are eliminated.  The COT/Adjutant will give the preparatory command, subordinate leaders give the supplemental, and the COT/Adjutant gives the command of execution.  Example:  “(Regimental Commander) REGIMENT, (ALL Company Commanders simultaneously echo) “Company”, (Regimental Commander) Present Arms” (ALL Company Commanders simultaneously echo) ”Present Arms” The only “rippled” command will be at the start of the ceremony when the Adjutant directs “SOUND ATTENTION.”  At that time Company Commanders will bring their units to attention in order from right to left.
·         Guidons will execute the preparatory command and the command of execution for each command their unit commanders give.
·         Some of the movements/actions specified in this template are not explicitly found in FM 3-21.  They are “best practices” that have been found to make the ceremony move more smoothly.

Ø        NARRATOR:   Retreat is a ceremony in which a unit honors the U.S. flag when it is lowered in the evening. The term “retreat” is taken from the French word “retraite” and refers to the evening ceremony. The bugle call sounded at retreat was first used in the French army and dates back to the Crusades. Retreat was sounded at sunset to notify sentries to start challenging until sunrise, and to tell the rank and file to go to their quarters. The ceremony remains as a tradition. The old cavalry call “To the Standard,” in use from about 1835, has been replaced by the present call of “To the Color.” This remains as music honoring the flag as it is lowered in the evening.  When a band is not present “To the Color is played by a bugler, and is the equivalent to the National Anthem in rendering honors.
